My interest in Gorillaz has gone through hot and cold spells. I enjoyed Demon Days, didn't really get into Plastic Peach and kinda fell out of interest with their music up until The Now Now, which I thought was fantastic.

But their self-titled debut album has always been my favorite. The entire album has a slow, dark, melancholic vibe that I loved as a kid and still return to as an adult. It also feels to me like their most experimental (though they have a lot of music these days that I still haven't given a listen. Maybe some day I'll check out more of their recent stuff and revise this statement lol).

I think a lot of Gorillaz' later music fell into a more pop-centric direction, with songs you could easily fit into a party playlist. That isn't a BAD thing by any means, but I love how this album creates an atmopshere that doesn't quite fit into that mold. The songs are all pretty unique in their own ways, but they all fit into a central vibe that I've never felt from any other album.

I think that's what makes a great album to me. If the music pulls you into a world or a feeling that's too complex to put into words, and so specific and unique that you haven't experienced it before, that's a really special thing. Sometimes, it's a little frustrating because you want MORE of that music, but all you have is this collection of songs, frozen in time from an increasingly distant past, that will likely never be replicated.

I certainly fit this album into that group.
